Her nonfiction work includes her memoir Cousins, which came out in 1991, and her 1995 work North Spirit. She would follow that collection up with several more, including the 1984 poetry collection Celestial Navigation and The Jesse James Poems in 1988, among others. Jiles first was published in 1973 with the release of her poetry collection Waterloo Express. Since then, she has resided in Texas on her own ranch close to San Antonio. In 1995, they moved back to San Antonio, purchasing a house there. The two traveled together for years and even lived in Mexico for a time. In 1991, she would move to live with him for a while in San Antonio, Texas. The author would get married to her husband Jim Johnson. While there, she learned the native Ojibwe language. Paulette continued this work for a decade, bringing native radio to locals in the north of Quebec and Ontario. She would help to set up FM radio stations that focused on native languages featuring indigenous peoples there. There she was employed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Just a year later, she would move to Canada, relocating to Toronto. She studied Romance Languages as her major and graduated in 1968.
